Wichman Law Firm represents clients in and around the Miami, Florida area, and especially at the main courthouse for criminal cases in Miami-Dade County, Florida, which is called the “Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building“. This is one of the State of Florida Courts, where State crimes are prosecuted. These can be serious felonies, misdemeanors, DUIs, or simple traffic violations of the law. The Sheriff’s Office of Miami-Dade County is typically where these cases start in the investigative process, and ultimately charged by the prosecutor in the Florida State’s Attorney Office in Miami-Dade County.

The building derives its name from a former attorney, Richard E. Gerstein, whom practiced in the area for many decades and was a six-term State Attorney for Miam-Dade County, FL, and is most famous for obtaining one of the first convictions in the Watergate scandal that eventually brought down President Nixon from office. He was in private practice at the conclusion of his career and passed away in 1992 at the age of 68.

The name inclusion of the word “Justice” is a common way many courts across the country entitle their courthouses that handle criminal justice cases, but that does not mean that that is the only types of cases a court like this would handle as it is common to handle many other types of cases as well.

Do you have to appear in person? and if so where to park if you have a criminal case there?

Miami criminal defendant’s will typically have to appear in person. When covid happened, there became some relaxation to this requirement to allow defendant’s to appear by zoom, however, the covid emergency has primarily passed. A criminal attorney at Wichman Law Firm can at times have the Court allow their client to not have to appear in person but this is not always allowed. Contact our office at (305) 317-1529 for help with your case and to see if this is a possibility for you under the circumstances of your unique situation. If you do need to appear in person, there are a multiple of neighborhood car lots that typically charge between $5-10, or you can find street parking to pay with the parking apps. If it is your first time to the courthouse, or if your case is in the morning, try to arrive well early so that you understand the timing for busy downtown Miami traffic, as well as the time to get through the security scanners.
